FROM THE NEW ALBUM

CHRISTMAS AT LAST

Start The Music…

Sonja Eddings Brown

After a difficult time in the world, a group of fabulous musicians decided to try to change the tone! Hollywood players who customarily share their talents with Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Michael Buble and The L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra, joined members of local symphony orchestras and a children’s choir…and made music!

Taking every appropriate precaution, Hollywood studio doors swung open. Music stands clicked on. Musicians tuned. Children tucked their masks into their pockets? And sang.

I hope you feel the heart, and the touch of courage that went into making this great Christmas album. Thanks to all of my friends for the generosity of their time and talents. Especially the beautiful “One Voice Children’s Choir” which joins me and sings with such authenticity.

It is our hope that wherever you are, this music will bring you joy. After another long year, it is“Christmas….At Last.”

Brad Smith and I began working on material during Christmas 2019, and finally began the first recording session in summer. Brad had encouraged me to write something for the album.  A daunting task when you consider that you’re song will be sitting next to something by Irving Berlin!  But one night during production I couldn’t sleep.  So I got up, lit the fireplace, IN AUGUST, and started pondering all my favorite Christmas memories.  Words began to spill onto my notebook page.  I finished the song sitting at an out-of-tune grand piano in downtown Los Angeles, before dawn.

I nearly shelved “Christmas At Last”, thinking the song was a near miss?  Our LA recording sessions were completed and we needed to focus on a full orchestra that was waiting in Utah. But Tony Award -winning arranger Bill Elliott and LA copyist Liz Finch heard my rough recording and joined my daughter Abby in insisting that I record it.  Bill worked through the night to make sure “Christmas At Last” was completed on time.

Thank heaven!

The song and its lyric seems to be a favorite.   Thus as “Christmas At Last” states, we all get through the season “hoping for some peace …and clutter!”   I hope somehow your Christmas morning will be restful and joyful and…always treasured.
